Most of the time, working in a tavern really wasn't all that bad. Plenty of customers came in from the waterfront nearby, mostly travellers. The people weren't usually that horrid, the job paid well, and hey, you even got free board in the inn upstairs!

It was times like these, however, that made you rethink your place of work.

"Oi, wench! Another round for the table!" A gruff voice called out to you, making you look up from your chore of cleaning the counter.

"Of course, sir." You replied easily, turning to the casks of ale that were stocked behind you. Setting the glasses on a tray, you made to walk over to the table you had been called to. A few jeers and catcalls from drunken and sober men alike reached your ears, but you blocked them out, focused on your job.

Some of the men pulled on your skirts as you walked by, but the plain blue dress was sturdy enough to withhold their tugs.

Setting down the tray on the table it had been requested to, you passed out the foaming mugs efficiently, wanting to get back to the safety of your counter.

"You know, missy, I wouldn't mind a round of you as well." The man's breath made you grimace as it fanned over your face, and you couldn't tell if you were more repulsed by the smell, or what he was insinuating through the (admittedly terrible) proposition.

Keeping your cool, you picked up the tray and stepped away smoothly. "Sorry sir, but I'm only here to serve the ale."

He smirked at that, showing off yellowing, crooked teeth. "Come on lovely, I know you're dying to show us what you've got!"

You sneered at that, but quickly turned around to hide it, and began to walk back to your spot in front of the barrels. You reminded yourself to keep steady on your way, despite how upset you were at being treated in such a way. A sudden pressure on your bottom, however, made you lose it a bit.

You spun around, only to be faced by the same man who had called you over in the first place. He was grinning, and you could see dark intentions behind his bloodshot eyes. "Come now, tell me, how much?"

"Get your hands off of me! I am not for sale!" You seethed at the drunk, done playing nice, and dug your fingernails into his arm to make him pull it back.

He winced a bit, but twisted your arm and pulled you harshly so that you fell into his lap. "Fiesty, I like that."

You scrambled to get up, sputtering. You knew your face was red with anger, and though you looked around for someone to give you assistance, the only others in the tavern were drunk old men who seemed to be rooting on your aggressor, or the few...ladies of the night, let's say, who frequented the old stone place. A couple of the young women gave you sympathetic glances from their spots on the laps of men who had paid for their services, but none of them made a move to help you. You didn't blame them, though, for how could they? This man was a lot larger, and stronger, than you were.

One of the man's hands grasped your chin as the other grasped your upper arm much too tight, and for a moment you wondered if it would leave a bruise, but you shook out of your thoughts when you remembered you needed to find a way away from the scoundrel.

"I'll say it again. Let. Me. Go!" You exclaimed, again attempting to stand up. When he did not relent, you bit his hand sharply and jumped to your feet as he cried out.

The man stood, furious, and lifted a hand to into the air as if he was going to slap you. "Why, you little-"

A silver line flashed through the air, and the man cried out again, lowering his hand and clutching it to his chest. Hearing a noise at the other side of the bar, you noted that the silver flash had been a knife, and it was now embedded in the side of the bar counter.

"Now, señor, where I come from, that is no way to speak to a lady." A cheerful, accented voice addressed from the doorway you hadn't realized had been opened. You turned to face the person who spoke, eyes widening when you took him in.

A tall, thin young man stood in your view, clad in a long red coat with gold embroidery running down its edges. A white ascot peeked out from beneath a brown vest, and he pulled off his plumed black hat when he noticed you looking over him, the action mussing his brown hair. If the hat wasn't enough of a clue, the cutlass and daggers that hung from his belt were a dead giveaway. The man was a pirate, a Spanish one at that judging from rhythm of his speech.

"Hola, chica." He greeted, playfully winking a green eye at you.

"Uh...hi?" You replied, still quite confused over who this man was exactly, not to mention how he had such precision with throwing knives at people. You reminded yourself to try not to get on his bad side.

The man who had been bothering you before had straightened up again, and began to walk over to the stranger. "I don't know who you think you are, but..."

He trailed off when the pirate pulled an ornate dagger from its sheath, and twirled it around nimbly as he walked towards the boozer.

"Well then, let me tell you who I am, ? I  am Captain Antonio Fernández Carriedo. You may call me Toni," He turned to you once more, grinning, before turning back to the man and raising an eyebrow. "You, however, may not."

Antonio was now standing in front of the other man, who stared up at him indignantly, but with a hint of fear in his eyes. "I do not recognize your name sir, and I do not know why you are bothering to protect this woman. She is no more than a common whore, a foul human being, look-"

Once again the man was cut off from what he was saying, this time by a knife at his throat. He gulped, and you noticed a beat of sweat roll down his dirt ridden face.

"What was that, señor? I assure you, I see no one foul other than the pity of a man in front of me." There was fire in the eyes of the Spaniard as he moved the weapon up from the man's jugular to trace at his face. As this happened, you looked around a bit, and noticed that most of your patrons had left the establishment, assumedly because of the altercation going on. Turning back to the pair, you realized that Antonio now had his dagger placed over the other man's thinly covered chest, the tip pressing lightly into the skin visible at his collar.

"Nervous, mi hombre? Good. Now, if you would like to keep your life, I suggest that you leave this place. Do not bother this woman again. Understood?" The cheerfulness that remained in the tone of the tanned male's voice shocked you as he spoke, but you watched on with wide eyes as the male who had been harassing you nodded and ran out the door the moment Antonio lifted the blade.

Turning to you, he smiled sheepishly. "Sorry about that! I couldn't help it when I noticed how he was treating such a beautiful lady. Oh, and I apologize for the counter. And for running everyone out of here."

Looking around the tavern, you found that by this point, everyone was gone, and it was just the two of you standing in the tavern. You sighed, thankful that no one had had a tab that night, and had all paid up front; you wouldn't be getting in trouble with your boss.

"N-No, that's fine. Thank you...for you know, helping me...and stuff." You had trouble looking into his intense gaze as you spoke, though you could feel it on you. "One question though...if you're you know...you, why did you do all that for me?"

He laughed. "Chica, I may be a pirate, but even I cannot stand by as a woman such as yourself is being bothered."

"Oh...well, thank you, again. I'm not sure if I would have been able to get away from him if you hadn't had such a...er...plethora of knives." The last part came out before you could really think about it, and you blushed as the Spaniard chuckled.

"I guess you are right, I do have quite a few." He pulled back his jacket and placed a hand on his hip to reveal at least half a dozen more blades held beside him. "But, I do believe that if the bleeding bite mark on his hand gave anything away, you would've gotten away from him eventually."

"I suppose." You giggled shyly, and walked back to the counter where you had stood at the beginning of the night. You pondered over how truly odd this situation was, this man was a pirate, a captain at that. From his good looks and his charm, it was hard to convince yourself that he probably pillaged and plundered all over the world, and guessing from his skills with weapons, definitely had more than a bit of blood on his hands.

You cleared your throat as you went to speak again. "Guessing from the fact that you ended up here, I'm guessing you came for a drink? It's on the house, after what you've done for me."

"Ah, you really don't have to. But yes, that was the initial purpose of my visit." He answered, his green eyes even more lively and pleasant than they had been when he first walked in.

"Really, it's no problem." You already had a glass filled, and slid it across the counter to him with precision.

The male thanked you with a smile, before taking a seat at a stool in front of you and picking up the mug.

Feeling a bit awkward, you picked up a cleaning rag, and began to wipe down the counter. You still felt his eyes on you after a while, and you glanced up at him through your lashes to find him looking at you still. "Yes?"

"Sorry, mi amor, it's just that you are so beautiful! I can't help but to look at you." There he went, turning on the charm again. You looked away from him and let out a nervous laugh, and you were certain that by this point an embarrassing blush had become stark on your face.

You lost yourself in your thoughts for a moment, contemplating over whether or not he was sincere, or whether he was just trying to...well, you know. You decided to believe the former option, despite the fact that he was a pirate, because most men wouldn't have bothered to help you and instead would have joined in with hassling you.

Antonio looked at you expectantly when you snapped out of it, and you realized that he had said something.

"O-Oh, sorry! What did you say?" You stuttered, and flushed even more.

The pirate's eyes crinkled with mirth, before he reiterated. "I asked for your name. You know mine, but you never told me yours."

"Oh! I'm (y/n). Sorry sir, I forgot to introduce myself."

"(Y/n)...a beautiful name." He winked again. "But don't call me sir, (y/n)! That's much too formal for my line of work. As I said before, you may call me Toni." His smile was captivating, and for a moment you wondered how one could keep such white teeth while living a life on the seas, but decided against asking about it.

"Force of habit, my apologies. Toni, then." You smiled back at him, very much aware of just how odd this situation was.

His smile broadened at that, somehow, and he held out a hand to you. You eyed it curiously from your spot leaning against the casks, but took it, albeit hesitantly. You expected a handshake, but instead lowered his head to your skin and brushed his lips against your knuckles.

In retrospect, you should have seen that coming, but as he pulled away a smile was still bright on his face.

He had not let go of your hand yet, and was now smoothing his thumb over the skin on the back of your hand. "Your skin is muy suave, very smooth, (y/n)."

"Oh, uh, thank you..." You winced at how awkward you sounded, but you weren't used to being complimented by such an attractive man.

"I'm sorry amor, do I make you uncomfortable?" He queried, his expression inquisitive, if a bit sad.

"N-No, that's not it! It's just, um...I'm not really used to...this." You gestured between Antonio and yourself.

"What? Speaking to a pirate? (Y/n), I assure you-" He was frowning as he spoke, and before he could finish, you cut him off.

"No, Toni, that's not what I mean!" He perked up when you used his name. "I meant being complimented by...uh...a sober man, you know? An attractive sober man..." You mumbled the last part quietly, but it appeared he heard you when he beamed.

"Ah, so you find me attractive?" He chuckled, smugly lifting his brow.

Again, you found yourself with a blush on your cheeks. "Shut up."

"For the record, (y/n), you are also quite attractive."

"You've told me that already, Toni. But, thank you." Despite this, you were still flustered. Why did the male have such an effect on you?

...

You had stayed there at the bar counter speaking to Antonio for a good hour or two, before you had looked out the window and realized it was now pitch black outside.

"Agh! It's so late!" You sprung up, surprised by the amount of time gone by. "Toni, I'm so sorry for keeping you here, you must have places to go, and..."

You trailed off when you realized that the Spaniard was laughing loudly. "...Why are you laughing?"

"Ah, it is sweet of you to be so worried." He wiped at his eyes, before another smirk pulled at his lips. "Truly, I have nowhere to be except back at my ship. I can return at any time though- it's not like the crew can leave without me."

"Right. Forgot." You bit your lip and looked away from the male.

"You know, (y/n), if you'd like, I'll bring you with me."

"Bring me where?" You were perplexed.

"To my ship of course. I can take you on some of the wildest adventures you will ever know." Something gleamed in his eyes as he said this, hinting that he was excited by the thought of more trips.

You were unsure. Of course, the pirate had been nothing but gracious and charming towards you for the entirety of the night, but did you really want to go on any dangerous escapades with him? Your life here was routine, sure, but you had a job, a stable living area.

"I...I don't know..." You were indecisive.

"Come, amorcito, please? I do not want to leave without you." He took one of your hands in both of his, and brought it closer to him. He was pleading at this point, emerald eyes shining and his lip forming a pout.

As you took in his rather childish demeanour, you wondered how he even got to be a pirate in the first place, not to mention a captain. Though, thinking back to how smoothly he had threatened (and injured) the drunk from earlier, you decided it may have been because he was much more deadly than he let on.

You then realized exactly what he had said to you, and a rosy hue returned to your cheeks. "W-What do you mean, you don't want to leave without me?!"

"Exactly as it sounds, (y/n)." A sly smile worked its way onto Antonio's face as he moved around the counter to stand beside you, and you couldn't help but note to yourself that the panache of his walk somehow made him even more attractive. "I do not wish to leave this place without the girl who has stolen my heart. What do you say, corazón?"

"Stolen your...? Oh, um..." You laughed nervously as you looked anywhere but him, which was hard considering the fact that he had backed you up to the counter, and his face was very close to your own. It wasn't that he didn't have you enamoured as well, but you were hesitant, knowing that leaving this life behind would never guarantee you a safe return.

The Spanish male lifted your face up with a finger underneath your chin, and he frowned down at you slightly. "Do you not believe me, (y/n)? I will prove it to you! Querida, the moment I set my eyes on you I knew that you were the one for me! When I walked in and I saw that cabronazo [1] bothering you I knew that I had to do something because no chica as wonderful as you should have to deal with anyone like that. I know that I cannot offer you stability, but I also cannot offer you my love, for you will have it either way. This entire evening I have been dizzy with the thought of you, and I am hopeless. Te amo, te adoro, you shine like the-"

"Calm down, Shakespeare, I believe you!" You exclaimed, a bashful grin on your face as you shook Antonio lightly by his shoulders. You were flustered by his declaration, but nonetheless extremely flattered.

"Oh. Okay! So, what do you say mi sol?" [2] He wasn't even fazed by what he had just announced to you, and you almost scoffed at how easygoing he managed to be.

"If you really like me that much-"

"Love you. I love you that much." The male cut you off. You blinked timidly, and flashed him a shy smile.

"Alright, if you love me that much, then...I suppose I'll have to come with you. You're not...so bad yourself..." You finished, realizing how painfully awkward you sounded, but the Spaniard only looked more delighted, and you guessed that he realized you were just as lovestruck as he was.

"Maravilloso!" [3] He cheered, and lifted you by the waist to spin you in a hug. Setting you down quickly, Antonio pulled your face to his own and pulled your lips to his quickly, but with passion.

Your mind was still spinning when he stepped away from you, but he only shot you a gleaming smile, unfazed.

"Now, mi amor," Antonio started, still gripping your hips. "Go collect your things, and we will be off. I shall have a cabin set for you next to my own, unless, of course, you'd like to sleep with me?"

"I'll take my own room, thanks." You deadpanned, poking his cheek when he actually seemed disappointed.

After a short while, when the two of you strolled out of the tavern in the darkness, you finally realized just how odd this situation was. Here you were, running off in the middle of the night with a pirate, of all people; a pirate who had captured your heart like it was nothing at all. What would stem from this decision? Was doing this a mistake?

As Antonio turned to smile at you, you could see nothing but adoration on his face. His large hand squeezed yours gently when his emerald eyes met your own from underneath that elaborate hat of his, and you pushed all of your doubts aside.

You knew you wouldn't regret this.

"His large hands ..." Okay as some who has tiny "baby hands" (according to an acquaintance) literally everyone's hands who's over than age of 13 is most likely large compared to mine
